One study examined the impact of phytonutrient intake on the consequences of breast cancer through a systematic review and meta-analysis of study observations.
The main categories of phytonutrients examined include soy , lignans (enterolactone), cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, turnips, etc.) and green tea . Prospective studies conducted on a large sample of patients have used dietary questionnaires to assess exposure to phytonutrients.
The findings indicate that intake of phytonutrients such as soy, lignans and green tea could positively influence breast cancer outcomes .
These findings suggest that post-diagnosis versus pre-diagnostic introduction of phytonutrients could have a significant impact on outcomes in breast cancer. In conclusion, the intake of such phytonutrients could represent an important complementary dietary strategy in the treatment and management of breast cancer .
